Abstract

This essay investigates the relation between instructors, syllabi, and regulations governing academic integrity.  It is argued that academic integrity policies serve a distinct purpose, a purpose other than the moral purpose that is usually stated when such policies are invoked. Rather, integrity policies serve an "extra-moral" role.  They cover pedagogical and epistemological inconsistencies inherent in the role of the instructor, and inherent in the policies themselves.
