Abstract

The course “Peoples of the Soviet Empire,” taught to second-year students in a lecture hall, has two pedagogical objectives. Firstly, the course teaches research and writing skills. Secondly, it provides cultural literacy by introducing New Zealand students to the peoples and historical experiences of the former Eastern bloc. Writing skills are assessed through a research essay, cultural literacy through short answer questions in a final exam.
