Abstract

This half-semester course, an elective offering at engineering college, was devised to introduce current and future teachers to key concepts, issues, and practices in science and engineering education. The course was designed to offer a foundation in education for those planning to pursue academic careers and/or concurrently working as teaching assistants and tutors. Over seven three-hour weekly meetings, which employed and demonstrated a range of active, learner-centered, and application-oriented pedagogies, students analyzed research-based approaches to learning and teaching and developed an original lesson based on the course materials and activities. This course can readily be adapted to serve graduate students or current instructors in postsecondary science and engineering departments.
