Course Redesign: Adding an Urban Education Component to Bilingual Education Coursework

“The Study of Bilingual Education” is the first in a series of coursework for bilingual education majors at Illinois State University (ISU). It serves as the foundations course and usually consists of 20-25 undergraduate students. The focus of this article is the process of course redesign, an option that is given to teacher educators at ISU to include an urban education focus with clinical experiences in under-resourced schools in their classes. Through this work, professors carefully align course goals, learning outcomes, assignments and assessments. Included here are an introductory essay, the re-designed course syllabus for “The Study of Bilingual Education” and all assignments.
